Rum Diary
2011. 120 minutes. Rated R.
“All I can tell you, is, this stuff is so powerful, they give it to communists.”
The Rum Diary is based on a book of the same name, which was written by one Hunter S. Thompson. It’s basically an origin story for both Gonzo journalism and Thompson’s voice and lifestyle. Set on Puerto Rico, the story follows young Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) as he dabbles in corporate journalism, discovers LSD, and develops his lifelong interest in social justice.
BLOW
The thing that separates this movie from other films which tackle the same subject (DRUGS) is that quite simply, it is based on the true stories of George Jung, Pablo Escobar, Carlos Lehder, and the Medellín Cartel. This stuff really happened. This song has perfect placement in the film and on the soundtrack; it wouldn’t kill my chances of success if you listened to it while you read. But hey, if you can’t, then you can’t.

Secret Window
This is a story we’ve all heard before, and it’s one we will all hear again. I like it though. For anyone who’s ever been really alone, you can sympathize with Mort Rainey, and at the same time, this story draws you in and isn’t a sad sad song or anything.
Quote: I don’t respond well to intimidation. Makes me feel *icky*.
