Ted

2012. 106 minutes. Rated R.

John: “I wish I had just gotten a Teddy Ruxpin!”

Ted: “Take that back.”

When I was younger, I had a stuffed cat named Furball, from the animated 90s series, Tiny Toon Adventures. I wished more than anything that he would come to life. I’m sure most people wished the same thing about their favorite toy (Right? Right???). Ted is writer/director Seth MacFarland’s dream come true. If you have seen his hit TV adult cartoon series, Family Guy, this movie is very reminiscent of the series.

Friends With Benefits

2011. 109 minutes. Rated R.
“I really have to stop buying into this bullshit Hollywood cliche of true love. Shut up, Katherine Heigl, you stupid, little liar!”

I admit it. I’m a sucker for romantic comedies (let’s not talk about how many times I’ve watched 27 Dresses, mmkay? And I agree, Katherine Heigl is a stupid little liar! But hope springs eternal, and I can’t tear myself away from them). There is something satisfying about the boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back plot. FWB enhances the romantic comedy with strong realistic humor and dialogue, and allows the characters to acknowledge romantic comedies are ridiculous and misleading… but they’d still like real life to pan out that way.

Black Swan

2010. 108 Minutes. Rated R.

“What is she doing here?”

I was reluctant to watch Black Swan when it was out in theaters, and again after its release. I am always reluctant to watch a movie after it receives so much fanfare.

I have only watched a couple of films with Natalie Portman, and I never formed an opinion about her acting. I am not particularly fond of psychological thrillers, either. As fate would have it, I was enthralled by the intensity of the drama at every turn. I mean, intense! I get anxious during such thrillers, conscious that the plot has a surprise in store behind every door or every verbal exchange, and the outcome, I am certain, will never be favorable. I might even call this movie a horror film, or perhaps an epic. Maybe a classic. Who knows.
