The Spotlight: Non Traditional Christmas Movies

When you’re tired of another rendition of Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol or another Santa Clause movie starring Tim Allen, here’s a list of some unique movies that take place during the holiday season but don’t necessarily star the “big man.”

1. Gremlins (1984. 106 minutes. Rated PG)

The Hunger Games

2012. 142 minutes. PG 13.

“A spark is fine as long as it is contained. So contain it.”

In a distant future, the country of Panem is punished for a terrible rebellion by sacrificing two teens, one male, one female, from each of their districts, in a televised battle. Twenty-four teen tributes go in, only one survives (It feels like some library events I’ve had).

Friends With Benefits

2011. 109 minutes. Rated R.
“I really have to stop buying into this bullshit Hollywood cliche of true love. Shut up, Katherine Heigl, you stupid, little liar!”

I admit it. I’m a sucker for romantic comedies (let’s not talk about how many times I’ve watched 27 Dresses, mmkay? And I agree, Katherine Heigl is a stupid little liar! But hope springs eternal, and I can’t tear myself away from them). There is something satisfying about the boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back plot. FWB enhances the romantic comedy with strong realistic humor and dialogue, and allows the characters to acknowledge romantic comedies are ridiculous and misleading… but they’d still like real life to pan out that way.

White Men Can’t Jump

White Men Can’t Jump

I always dug this movie, it’s really funny. Now let’s begin by making sure everyone is positively aware, that I don’t think this movie deserved any awards, I just liked it, because Woody Harrelson is a riot in it.
